Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) on Wednesday announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with K2 Cranes & Components Pvt Ltd to jointly design, develop and manufacture cranes and related equipment for marine, defence and shipyard applications.
The development was disclosed through a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
Details of the agreement
According to the company, the MoU was signed on January 28, 2026, and is aimed at expanding GRSE’s product portfolio beyond its core shipbuilding and marine engineering operations.
The partnership will focus on:
- Design and development of cranes
- Manufacturing of cranes for marine, defence and shipyard use
- Production of associated equipment for domestic and international clients
A copy of the press release related to the agreement has been enclosed with the exchange filing.
Alignment with Atmanirbhar Bharat goals
In its press release, GRSE said the collaboration is aligned with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiatives.
The company highlighted that indigenous manufacturing of cranes and equipment under this arrangement is expected to:
- Reduce dependence on imports
- Support domestic defence and shipbuilding infrastructure
- Enable access to export opportunities over the medium to long term
Strategic rationale
While GRSE’s core strength remains warship construction and marine platforms, the company has been gradually diversifying into engineering products. It already manufactures modular steel bridges and has delivered over 5,900 units to domestic and overseas clients.
Management indicated that the tie-up with K2 Cranes could help GRSE explore profitable opportunities in:
- Shipyard infrastructure
- Defence logistics equipment
- Marine and offshore support systems

Presence and track record
GRSE operates four shipyards and has built more than 115 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign nations. The company also undertakes construction of frigates, corvettes, fast attack craft, offshore patrol vessels and landing craft.
In addition to shipbuilding and ship repair, GRSE has expanded into:
- Prefabricated steel bridges
- Deck machinery
- Diesel engine overhauling
- Naval gun and surface weapon manufacturing
Market perspective
The MoU is currently a non-binding agreement and does not involve immediate financial commitments. However, analysts typically view such partnerships as strategic enablers that can strengthen long-term order visibility and diversification.
Further details regarding timelines, order inflow and revenue contribution are expected to emerge as the collaboration progresses.
